How to Winterize Your Outdoor Kitchen

Having an outdoor kitchen or another appliance setup can make your home even more enjoyable. But when the weather turns cooler, it’s important to make sure that everything is properly winterized. This is an essential step to ensure that your outdoor kitchen or grill is ready to go in the Spring!


Step 1:

Shut off and drain water lines (and leave the drain valves in the open position). If you do nothing else to prepare your outdoor appliances for winter, make sure you do this! Draining the water lines and keeping the drainage valves open will prevent your lines from freezing.


Step 2:

Clean out and unplug all appliances. All appliances should be thoroughly cleaned and unplugged. This includes ice machines, refrigerators, grills, and sinks. Any gas lines should be shut off as well.  This is also a great time to degrease your grill and make sure that all food particles have been cleaned up. You can also season your grill before you shut it down by applying vegetable oil to the grates (both sides) and cooking with the lid closed for 20 minutes or so. A well-seasoned grill will be a nice dark brown color.


Step 3:

Treat cabinets. Coat any stainless steel cabinets with polish to keep them protected. Wood cabinets can be treated with oil or sealant to keep them from being damaged by cold and fluctuating temperatures. Double-check to ensure that all of the cabinets have been thoroughly cleaned and food removed.
