Choosing the Best Refrigerator Style for You

Refrigerator styles have expanded greatly in the past few decades; no longer are you restricted to just a couple of types. This does mean that you have to put a lot more thought into which style you buy if you don’t already have a favorite model. Deciding which one you want takes a little time, but it’s worth it once you’ve identified the features you’re sure you’ll need.

The Traditional Top Freezer

The top-freezer model is your basic model with a main refrigerator compartment and a freezer on top of that. They’re comparatively inexpensive and are available in many different sizes. If you want to save money, this is definitely a model to look at. However, the back of the lower shelf in the fridge and the very back of the freezer can be difficult to reach if you tend to pack a lot inside.

The Side-By-Side

This model has the freezer and fridge side by side. A big advantage to this is that the freezer has many more shelves, and if you’re unable to reach the top shelves of the appliance, you still have access to freezer space below. However, because each compartment has only half the width of the compartments in a top-bottom model, you can’t store very big items, like large jelly roll pans.

The One- or Two-Drawer Bottom Freezer

Another style that many people have taken to has the freezer on the bottom as a drawer. You can find these in one- and two-drawer models. The refrigerator is on top and has a swinging door. Many people prefer this model as they find it easier to access all of the items in the freezer. The disadvantages are that you may end up with some items buried at the bottom of the drawer.

The French-Door Model

A variation on the bottom freezer drawer, it has two doors on the fridge that open up like French doors. This is great if the fridge is in a narrower kitchen where a full door wouldn’t be able to swing open all the way without hitting a cart or table near the appliance.
