Top Freezer Refrigerator vs. Side-by-Side Refrigerator

When it comes to deciding on a refrigerator for your kitchen, it's reasonably likely that you'll be choosing between two popular types: a top freezer refrigerator or a side-by-side refrigerator. With so much choice out there, though, it's important to thoroughly analyze the differences so you can make the right selection for your home and needs.

In a nutshell, a top freezer refrigerator has a freezer compartment on top. This fridge option fits comfortably in most homes, so this might be a natural choice for you. Alternatively, the side-by-side refrigerator usually has a more 'deluxe' feel, with two doors/sides - one being a fridge, the other, a freezer. It's likely that this type of fridge will have more features, which we'll explore below. Let's look at the pros and cons of each in more detail.

Top Freezer Refrigerators: PROS
- Storage: top freezer refrigerators usually have more storage space than side by side refrigerators, as the freezer space does not deplete from the width of your fridge area.
- Economy: top freezer fridges are often cheaper and use less energy, since the temperatures fluctuate less within the freezer area, also helping you conserve energy.

Side-by-Side Refrigerator: PROS
- Features: side by side refrigerators often have additional features, such as water and/or ice dispensers. This helps to save cost, and also can be quite an attractive function to have in your household, making the fridge feel more luxurious an item.
- Efficiency: typically, the selection of individual items is easier in a side by side fridge. Units are often wider, meaning more room for foodstuffs at eye level, which is handy if you often need to grab things quickly.

Top Freezer Refrigerators: CONS
- Efficiency: when it comes to the ease of item selection, a top freezer fridge might easily lose out, considering you'll likely have to bend down to pick up items which are placed below eye level. This isn't as much of an issue in a side by side refrigerator.

Side-by-Side Refrigerator: CONS
- Economy: a key disadvantage of the side by side refrigerators is that maintenance cost may be high. Water and ice-maker compartments require maintenance and monitoring, which will likely increase the cost of the fridge to you. Additionally, the large size of side by side refrigerators makes them uneconomical for those with small kitchens.
