Which is Better? Top Load vs. Front Load

The washing machine is one of the most important appliances in any home. With so many different models on the market, it can be difficult to choose the best device for your needs. Budgetary requirements, energy efficiency, and ease of use are all factors that come into play – but should you choose a top-loading washing machine or a front-loading model?

Top-Load Washers
Top-loading devices are generally more convenient because it means you won’t have to bend to load and unload clothing. Most top-loaders also offer the opportunity to add clothes mid-cycle – perfect for when you’ve forgotten to add a stray sock from the laundry basket.

When it comes to fabric softener distribution, top-loading washing machines tend to perform better than their front-loading counterparts, and top-loaders fitted with an agitator will generally complete their cycles quicker than front-loaders.

However, top loading washing machines tend to struggle when it comes to washing large items (such as pillows or blankets), and these won’t always become fully immersed in water.

Front-Load Washers
When it comes to achieving a better-quality clean, it’s difficult to deny that front-loading washers win hands-down. Not only do front-loaders perform better, but they also use much less energy than top-loading devices. While a front-loading washer might cost slightly more than a similar top-loading model, what you could save on your utility bills could negate this initial financial outlay.

Front-loading machines are also much easier to install and offer greater flexibility. For example, a front-loading device can be easily stacked with a dryer, which is ideal for homes where space is at a premium.

The only real drawback of front-loading devices is that mold can build up around the rubber door seal over time. This can leave your clothes with a faint, fusty smell, and will require regular maintenance to prevent. Top-loading devices don’t have this issue as they rely on gravity to allow water to escape, which means excess water won’t get trapped in any of the seals within the device.

The Verdict
Top loading washers offer convenience, whereas front-loading washers are more energy efficient and deliver a better clean – but they’re also more expensive and require more maintenance. Ultimately, your budget, the amount of space you have in your home and personal preference should dictate which type of appliance you opt for. There’s no right or wrong answer, and both devices have their benefits and drawbacks.
